Time does not spare anything, so sooner or later even the highest quality wooden furniture can become worthless and a new coat of varnish will not restore its former beauty. Old scratched chairs, a comfortable chest of drawers that have long lost a respectable appearance or even an expensive table, due to stains and defects more like trash. Do not rush to throw such things. Although old furniture does not look presentable, it’s important to remember that it is made in good faith. To invest in the restoration of such furniture will be more profitable than buying a new one.

Antique, antique furniture is best left in the hands of professionals. They have experience, materials, tools, and therefore more opportunities to give furniture a second life, preserving its value. Moreover, if the furniture does not have any element, they, choosing the right wood, will be able to make a quality replacement.
Restoration work can be done independently. If you have the time, patience, decoration skills, then you can get a very interesting result.

Like any repair, restoration begins with the preparation phase. All handles, hinges, and other fasteners should be removed first. Rusted parts are treated with special tools. Parts that have become completely unusable can be replaced.

The surface of the furniture must be cleaned of stains, dirt, an old layer of varnish or paint. You can use sandpaper, a hand grinder or special washes. The latter tool is especially convenient to use if the surface has many small decorative elements. Carefully inspect the wood for pests. This is especially true for furniture that has been stored for a long time in adverse conditions. If insects are wound in the wood, then all holes must be treated with a disinfectant.

The next step will be the elimination of defects. First of all, remove debris and dust from the surface. With minor scratches, furniture wax will do just fine. Putty on wood will help fix small chips and dents. It is applied in thin layers in several passes. The putty surface must be sanded and primed.

After all work on the preparation of the surface is completed, the furniture should be well dried.
And then you can follow the flight of your imagination. You can simply varnish and leave everything in its original form. Using paint will allow you to change the color of the furniture according to the interior. And if you are a good artist, you can create absolutely unique furniture by adding art painting. Mosaic, decoupage and many other techniques will allow you to create a unique thing.
