Description and purpose of the device

A milling cutter is a device with which wood is processed, less often metal or plastic. It is mainly used in workshops for finishing and repair work. If we say what a router is, it can be described as an electrical mechanism consisting of several elements:

  • shaft motor;
  • collet (milling cutters and drills are fixed on it);
  • cylindrical body;
  • speed controller;
  • pipe branch;
  • clamping nut;
  • spindle with lock button;
  • bed.

If we talk about what a milling cutter is for, we can distinguish quite a lot of different tasks:

  • receiving grooves;
  • selection of nests;
  • trimming unnecessary parts;
  • instagram viewer
  • making holes;
  • thread;
  • engraving works;
  • slot preparation;
  • cutting spikes;
  • the formation of a pattern, a pattern according to a template.

Types of milling cutters

We can say about the milling cutter that it is a tool for processing wooden parts. For example, it can be used to prepare grooves or through holes with which to securely connect workpieces. Today they produce quite a few models of the device, they are classified according to different criteria. For example, depending on the design, the following devices are distinguished:

  • upper;
  • lamellar;
  • edging.

The top router for wood, as the name implies, is installed directly above the workpiece. A rotating cutter is fixed in the central part, making it convenient to hold the tool during operation. The equipment is universal, it can be used for different types of tasks. Acquire such an apparatus as experienced and novice carpenters.

If we talk about what a lamellar type milling machine is used for, then first of all we can distinguish the manufacture of locks and grooves. These elements are often used on flooring and lining.

Moreover, the lamellar device is highly specialized, it is not used for other tasks. Therefore, often masters prefer to use the upper tools by attaching them to the table. Thanks to the double pass, it is possible to obtain a groove of the same quality as on the lamellar apparatus.

It is also interesting to understand what an edge-type router is for. It is used for edge processing. Another direction is chamfering. Compared to the top tool, this tool is lighter, it can be used for a specific task, and it is especially convenient to work. As a rule, such a device is used only for professional purposes; it is practically never found in home workshops.

Another classification is associated with the allocation of 2 groups:

  • manual frezer;
  • stationary machine.

In the first case, the device is moved along relative to the workpiece, which lies motionless, fixed to the table. It is clear why a milling cutter of this type is needed. It is used in home workshops for the manufacture of various parts, connections and patterns.

In contrast, a stationary wood milling machine is a machine. In it, the cutter is fixed motionless, so during operation it is necessary to move the workpiece - this is done by the operator. Such equipment is used in professional workshops for creating holes, threading and many other tasks.

How to use a manual router

If we talk about what a manual wood router can do, then basically it is designed to perform universal operations. The device is used for milling quarters, creating grooves, elements for joining and decorating. It comes in handy for creating an end face, any hole, edge and other operations.

The advantage of such an apparatus is that even a novice carpenter can master it. The general instructions are:

  1. Choose a nozzle that is suitable in diameter and install it.
  2. Snap the shank into the chuck by a maximum of 2 cm.
  3. Set the cutter to the required depth.
  4. The adjustment knob is placed in the middle.
  5. Adjust the speed controller. For example, if the nozzle is 4 cm, 10,000 rpm is sufficient.

Next, do what a wood router can do. You can make holes, form poses, apply patterns. While working with the device, it is necessary to install a ruler-guide or use a template. For processing different parts, narrow-ended rulers are used. They are attached perpendicular to the workpiece.

It is useful to know what a router is doing, as well as how to follow safety precautions. The basic requirements are standard - to take a stable position, hold the tool very tightly, wear a protective suit. If all movements are carried out accurately, the details will be of high quality, and the processing speed will constantly increase.
