What is rust on currant leaves?

Rust on currant leaves is a fungal disease. Most often disputes fall on the bushes from coniferous trees, namely from cedar and pine. For this reason, this disease is common in the middle zone of the country.

If the spores hit the currant leaves, this does not mean that signs of their presence will appear this season. As a rule, the disease develops in a humid atmosphere. But, nevertheless, the fungus hibernates beautifully, so the spread of infection can begin in spring.

Rust on currant leaves is easy to recognize. Tiny yellowish specks appear on top of the leaves. On the bottom of the sheet you can see the pads of yellow or orange. They have a summer fungus, which will later develop.

Over time, yellow and red bars will grow out of the pads, and they will contain ripe rust spores. As the disease spreads by the fall, the entire inside of the leaf will be covered with rusty-colored hairs, the leaf will literally become fluffy.

How to deal with rust on currants?

There are a number of preventive measures that will avoid the problem of rust on the leaves. First of all, there are special varieties that are particularly resistant to this fungal disease. Residents of the middle zone of the country is better to give preference to them.

Do not plant currant bushes near conifers. Otherwise, the risk of a dispute is very high. Do not forget about spraying currant bushes with means that increase plant resistance.

Spraying currant bushes is recommended during the most important periods for culture:

  • the appearance of the first leaves;
  • bud formation;
  • flowering period;
  • ten days after the third spraying at high risk of spreading the disease.

Bordeaux liquid or copper chloroxide is used for spraying. The first is a solution of blue vitriol( 50 grams) and quicklime( 75 grams) in 5 liters of water. To prepare the second, it is necessary to dilute 35 grams of the 95% drug in 10 liters of water.

If, nevertheless, rust spores appeared on the bushes, it is necessary to take urgent measures. The following describes how to deal with rust on currants:

  1. Remove infected leaves from the bushes so that the spores can not spread further.
  2. Infected leaves are best burned, as even in the compost the fungus can overwinter and fall in the spring on other plants.
  3. Shrubs spray one of the above tools.
